In what has become a trademark move, BJP MLA Kishor Kanani (Kumar) from Surat's Varachha constituency has once again thrust himself into the spotlight with a scathing letter to authorities. Known for his detailed expos&eacute;s backed by evidence, Kanani's latest missive to the Surat Police Commissioner alleges serious corruption within the Sarthana police force during a recent raid on a duplicate detergent manufacturing operation.
The letter, which has since been released to media outlets, details how Sarthana police personnel allegedly accepted bribes of Rs eight lakh to manipulate an official investigation. According to Kanani, a raid led by Head Constable Yuvrajsinh involving 8-10 police officers uncovered a significant counterfeit detergent operation. However, the MLA claims the officers deliberately underreported the value of seized goods, documenting only Rs 3 lakh worth of fake detergent in the FIR while allowing the remaining Rs 17 lakh worth of product to be transported to another location under police supervision.
More troublingly, Kanani alleges that while three partners own the firm in question, the police deliberately omitted two partners&mdash;Hiren and Arpit Golaviya&mdash;from the official report despite their presence during the raid. This selective reporting, he suggests, was part of the arrangement secured through the substantial bribe.
"This deliberate manipulation of official records represents a severe breach of public trust," the letter reportedly states. "The citizens of Sarthana deserve law enforcement officials who uphold justice rather than subvert it for personal gain."
Kanani further notes in his letter that concerned citizens from the Sarthana area had previously approached Police Inspector M.B. Jhala with complaints about corrupt practices within the force, yet no action was taken. The MLA has urged the Police Commissioner to review CCTV footage from the area to substantiate these serious allegations.
In response to these charges, the Commissioner of Police has ordered a departmental inquiry to be led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police. The investigation will examine the veracity of claims regarding both the underreported seizure and the alleged bribery scheme.
This latest letter continues Kanani's emerging reputation as what local media have dubbed a "mobile letter bomb"&mdash;a reference to his penchant for detailed written expos&eacute;s that invariably find their way to press outlets. While his supporters praise his vigilance in exposing corruption, critics suggest these public letters also serve to elevate his political profile and strengthen his brand image as an anti-corruption crusader.
