As many as 60 students from a girls&rsquo; residential school in Mandor Lukhadia village of Gujarat&rsquo;s Dahod district became unwell following a suspected case of food poisoning, leading to urgent medical attention and the launch of an official inquiry.
The affected students reportedly began showing symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, and nausea shortly after consuming their meal. Initially, 12 girls were admitted to the Limkheda Government Hospital for medical care. As the situation developed through the night, additional students began to exhibit similar health issues and were also transported to the hospital in emergency vehicles.
Doctors attending to the cases confirmed that all students were in stable condition. &ldquo;No major complications have been observed so far, but this event highlights significant concerns regarding food safety in such residential facilities,&rdquo; a hospital representative said.
In response, senior officials from the district administration, accompanied by food safety authorities, arrived at the hospital late in the evening to evaluate the circumstances. An investigation was initiated jointly by the district administration and the Food Department. Samples from the evening meal were collected and sent to a laboratory for testing.
The school serves as a residence for a large number of girls from nearby tribal regions and has previously been the site of various welfare projects. Authorities have stated that further information will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
This incident follows a similar case reported on June 18 in Bhawani Nagar, where 25 children suffered illness after consuming contaminated buttermilk. The children experienced vomiting and gastrointestinal discomfort, and health officials quickly intervened with treatment while also beginning a probe into the cause.
District health authorities have been directed to carry out frequent checks on food and water quality. Simultaneously, civic bodies have been instructed to conduct training sessions for kitchen personnel on proper hygiene and food handling. Awareness initiatives are also underway in at-risk communities to encourage safe preparation and storage of food.
