In a landmark deal, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ratified a 20-year strategic partnership agreement with Iran. &nbsp;This will formalize an agreement initially signed by the two nations earlier this year. The law was signed on Monday, as reported by the Russian state news agency RIA.
The agreement had previously cleared both chambers of the Russian Parliament. The state Duma, the lower house, ratified it on April 8, followed by approval from the Federation Council, the upper house, on April 16.
The comprehensive partnership aims to deepen bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including security, defence, trade, and regional strategy. The agreement also allows for automatic five-year extensions after the initial 20-year period.
&ldquo;In accordance with the agreement, Russia and Iran seek to strengthen relations in all areas of mutual interest, enhance security and defence collaboration, and closely coordinate on regional and global platforms,&rdquo; the Federation Councigeopl said in a statement.
The original deal was signed on January 17 in Moscow by President Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Speaking at a joint press conference following the signing, Putin described the agreement as a &ldquo;breakthrough document&rdquo; designed to serve as a roadmap for long-term cooperation.
&ldquo;This truly breakthrough document is aimed at creating the necessary conditions for the stable and sustainable development of Russia and Iran, and our entire common Eurasian region,&rdquo; Putin stated.
The agreement comes amid shifting geopolitical alignments and is expected to bolster Russia-Iran ties across key strategic sectors in the coming decades.
