In a major step towards closure, 307 tonnes of toxic waste from the site of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy have been safely incinerated at a facility in Pithampur, Dhar district, marking the end of a decades-long public health and environmental hazard.
The incineration began on May 5, 2025, and was completed on June 29, within 50 days, under the Madhya Pradesh High Court&rsquo;s directive to finish the operation within 72 days. The waste had remained abandoned at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) premises for nearly 40 years following the world&rsquo;s worst industrial disaster.
Despite strict safety measures and real-time pollutant monitoring, the disposal faced protests from Pithampur residents and criticism from Bhopal-based survivor advocacy groups, who fear secondary contamination.
