The Gujarat state cabinet on Wednesday approved the division of Banaskantha district. An official announcement will be made on the decision soon. This move will bring the total number of districts in Gujarat to 34. 
The proposed division will involve 14 talukas of Banaskantha, with two new districts being formed&mdash;each consisting of 7 talukas. The talukas from Deesa to Danta will remain part of the original Banaskantha district, while the talukas from Deesa to Suigam are expected to form a new district named Thagad. 
Currently, Gujarat has 33 districts, and there has been a long-standing discussion regarding creation of three new districts. Not only Banaskantha, but Patan and Kutch districts may also be divided to form new districts in the state. However, the division of Banaskantha is expected to be the first of these changes.
According to reports, the decision to divide Banaskantha district aimed at easing local residents&rsquo; access to government services. As the state moves forward with this division, more details are expected in the official announcement from the Chief Minister&rsquo;s Office (CMO).
