A major incident occurred at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 when a helium-filled hot air balloon exploded, leaving six devotees injured. The accident took place on Monday during the Basant Panchami 'snan' near Akhada Marg in Sector 20 of the mela area.
The balloon exploded with a loud bang while it was ascending with the devotees on board. All the passengers were severely burned and were immediately referred to Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital, operated by the Medical College, for treatment. One of the injured is in critical condition.
Fortunately, the explosion occurred at a lower altitude, preventing a more devastating outcome. Had it exploded at a higher elevation, the consequences could have been even more tragic.
The injured have been identified as Pradeep (27), from Rishikesh, Aman (13), from Haridwar, Nikhil (16), from Rishikesh, Mayank (50), from Prayagraj, Lalit (32), from Khargone, Madhya Pradesh, and Shubham (25), from Indore.
Earlier, on January 29, a stampede occurred, claiming 30 lives at the Maha Kumbh.
Concerned authorities are investigating the incident to ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future.
