Search continues for 13 missing workers after Hyderabad factory blast
The search for thirteen missing workers following a devastating blast at a pharmaceutical unit in Pashamylaram, near Hyderabad, continued into Wednesday, more than 48 hours after the explosion.
The incident at Sigachi Industries Pvt. Ltd., which resulted in the deaths of at least 36 workers, caused the three-storey building to collapse under the force of the blast. Rescue teams have been working around the clock to clear the debris in the hope of locating survivors or recovering bodies.
According to officials, thirteen individuals remain unaccounted for and are feared trapped beneath the rubble at the site, located in the Pashamylaram industrial area of Sangareddy district, approximately 50 kilometres from Hyderabad.
Heavy rainfall on Tuesday night temporarily disrupted search efforts, but operations resumed on Wednesday morning. Rescue workers, including personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), and local police, deployed cranes and JCB machines to aid in the debris removal.
The explosion occurred on Monday morning in the factory&rsquo;s Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) drying unit. At the time, 143 workers were reported to be on-site. Officials have confirmed the death toll at 36, with 34 others injured, some critically. Sixty workers have been accounted for, while thirteen remain missing.
Only four of the deceased have been positively identified so far. Many victims were burnt beyond recognition, prompting authorities to collect DNA samples for forensic identification. Doctors at the Government Area Hospital in Patancheruconducted tests on 20 bodies, and the samples have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for profiling and cross-verification with samples provided by relatives.
Most of the deceased and missing workers were migrant labourers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy visited the site on Tuesday and announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹1 crore to the families of the deceased. Immediate financial assistance of ₹1 lakh was handed over to the families of 11 victims. He also announced ₹10 lakh for those critically injured and ₹5 lakh for other injured workers. An additional ₹50,000 was provided to all injured workers as immediate relief.
Meanwhile, a police case has been registered against Sigachi Industries based on a complaint filed by a relative of one of the victims.
