Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman received a dividend cheque of ₹8,076.84 crore today from SBI Chairman C.S. Setty, marking SBI&rsquo;s payout to the government for FY 2024&ndash;25. The cheque was handed over in her office, witnessed by senior officials.
This substantial dividend reflects strong profit growth across India&rsquo;s leading public sector enterprises during the January&ndash;March quarter. SBI led the charge with a full-year net profit of ₹70,901 crore, while LIC reported ₹48,151 crore for FY 2024&ndash;25. During Q4 alone, SBI posted ₹18,643 crore in net profit and LIC ₹19,013 crore.
In the energy segment, Coal India earned ₹9,604 crore, Indian Oil Corporation ₹7,265 crore, and ONGC ₹6,448 crore in the last quarter. Top power firms also contributed significantly: NTPC earned ₹7,897 crore, PFC ₹8,358 crore, and Power Grid Corporation ₹4,143 crore during the same period.
These robust PSU earnings not only generated hefty dividend payouts but also boosted the government's non-tax revenues via higher corporate tax collections. Additionally, these PSUs&rsquo; expansive capex plans are playing a key role in driving economic growth and employment.
Data from the Controller General of Accounts confirms that India successfully met its fiscal deficit target of 4.8% of GDP for 2024&ndash;25. Total government revenue&mdash;combining tax and non-tax receipts&mdash;reached ₹30.36 lakh crore, or about 98.3% of the revised estimate, with PSU earnings forming a vital part of non-tax revenue.
