In a devastating turn of events, torrential rains have lashed the northeastern states of India, claiming at least 25 lives over the past 24 hours. The intense rainfall, caused by a low-pressure system over North Bengal and Meghalaya, has led to widespread flooding, deadly landslides, and structural collapses across the region. With the monsoon yet to officially arrive, this early onslaught has caught many communities off guard, leaving thousands displaced and several still missing.
In Assam, the situation is particularly grim. Nine people have lost their lives, including five in Guwahati where a landslide struck a residential area in the Bonda locality, killing three children among others. The release of excess water from the Ranganadi dam further exacerbated the flood situation in Lakhimpur. Over 58,000 people have been affected in the state, with more than 1,200 seeking shelter in government-run relief camps. Authorities have issued a red alert for three districts and an orange alert for eight others.
Arunachal Pradesh has reported seven deaths. Five people were killed when their vehicle was swept away by strong currents on National Highway 13 in East Kameng district. In a separate incident, two laborers died in a landslide in Subansiri district. Chief Minister Pema Khandu has announced an ex gratia of ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased.
In Meghalaya, known for its world-record rainfall, seven people have died, including three children. Cherrapunji and Mawsynram recorded a staggering 47 cm of rain in a single day, overwhelming local infrastructure and triggering landslides.
Mizoram witnessed the deaths of six people, including three Myanmar nationals who were staying in a hotel that collapsed during the heavy rains. In Nagaland, one person died in Ch&uuml;moukedima when a large rock dislodged by the rains crushed a vehicle on the road. Meanwhile, in Manipur, rivers like the Iril and Nambul are flowing above danger levels, prompting authorities to issue flood warnings for several low-lying areas.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted a slight reduction in rainfall intensity over the next 24 hours, but no significant relief is expected. Heavy rain is likely to continue over the next two days, especially in sub-Himalayan regions of West Bengal and Sikkim.
Other parts of the country are also experiencing pre-monsoon activity. Light to moderate showers accompanied by gusty winds are forecast for Jammu &amp; Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. Central and eastern states including Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh are expected to receive scattered rain. In Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, wind speeds of 45 to 55 km/h may accompany light showers.
Rescue and relief operations are underway, with state governments urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow official advisories. This early season deluge has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved disaster preparedness and climate-resilient infrastructure in India&rsquo;s northeastern frontier.
