A strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on Friday, just days after a more powerful tremor shook the same region and injured dozens of people. Authorities have issued a tsunami advisory, warning that waves up to one metre may reach parts of the northern Pacific coastline.
The quake was centred roughly 130 kilometres off the coast near Kuji in Iwate prefecture on the island of Honshu. Early assessments showed that Friday&rsquo;s shaking was weaker than the earlier 7.5-magnitude jolt earlier in the week, which caused items to fall from shelves, damaged roads, shattered windows and generated tsunami waves of about 70 centimetres.
The latest quake registered a 4 on Japan&rsquo;s seismic intensity scale, which ranges from 1 to 7.
The tsunami advisory urges residents in coastal areas to stay away from the shoreline. Unlike a higher-level tsunami warning, evacuation is not required under the current alert.
Friday&rsquo;s earthquake comes on the heels of Monday&rsquo;s major tremor off the coast of Aomori, which left at least 50 people injured and prompted temporary tsunami alerts in several communities along the Pacific coast. Following that earlier quake, authorities had cautioned residents from Hokkaido to Chiba to remain on high alert for the possibility of another strong earthquake within the week.
Japan is among the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, sitting atop four major tectonic plates along the Pacific &ldquo;Ring of Fire.&rdquo; The nation experiences around 1,500 tremors each year, most of which are mild. However, the impact varies significantly depending on depth and location beneath the Earth&rsquo;s surface.
