The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA), based in Chennai, has sanctioned ₹82 lakh to the Andhra Pradesh Biodiversity Board to support the conservation of Red Sanders, an endangered tree species native to the state.
According to the environment ministry, the funding aims to enhance in-situ conservation efforts, safeguard natural habitats, and ensure the sustainable management of Red Sanders, which is prized for its medicinal properties and rare timber.
Red Sanders, classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List, is endemic to the Seshachalam hills of Andhra Pradesh and continues to face threats from illegal logging and smuggling driven by high international demand.
Officials said the financial support will be used for habitat restoration, awareness campaigns, and strengthening local biodiversity management committees to protect the ecological heritage of the region.
