At first glance, Cuba&rsquo;s blue-headed quail-dove doesn&rsquo;t seem like much. It&rsquo;s mostly brown, with a slender beak, and walks like it's on a mission. Compared to Cuba&rsquo;s flashy parrots, it&rsquo;s easy to miss.
But don&rsquo;t be fooled&mdash;this bird is full of surprises! Scientists have been trying to figure out its secrets for years, and what they&rsquo;ve discovered is pretty amazing.
Jessica Oswald, an ornithologist at the Florida Museum of Natural History, led the study, which was published in Biology Letters. She and her team hoped to find clues about the bird&rsquo;s origins, but the results were shocking.
&ldquo;This species is even more evolutionarily distinct than the dodo was,&rdquo;&nbsp;Oswald said. That&rsquo;s right&mdash;this Cuban dove is more of a rare find than the famous dodo, which went extinct a long time ago. Scientists used to think it was related to doves in Central and South America, but its DNA tell a different story. It&rsquo;s not closely related to them&mdash;or to doves from Australia, which it resembles in some ways.
This bird&rsquo;s family tree might go back as far as 50 million years. To put that in perspective, humans and chimpanzees split from a common ancestor only about 5 to 6 million years ago. The blue-headed quail-dove has been doing its own thing for a very, very long time.
While the blue-headed quail-dove isn&rsquo;t extinct like the dodo&mdash;at least not yet&mdash;it&rsquo;s in serious trouble. Only about 1,000 mature individuals remain in Cuba, and they face threats from habitat loss, hunting, and invasive species like cats.
Scientists had never been able to get DNA from this bird before because it&rsquo;s so rare. The only available museum specimens were very old, making it hard to study. Oswald and her team had to use super-advanced techniques&mdash;ones usually used for fossils&mdash;to study a bird that was collected way back in 1958. The results? A scientific bombshell.
&ldquo;She called me up and said, &lsquo;Are you sitting down?&rdquo;&nbsp;said David Steadman, a co-author of the study. He expected bad news&mdash;maybe they hadn&rsquo;t recovered enough data. Instead, what they found changed everything.
Most doves in the Caribbean arrived from the Americas. But the blue-headed quail-dove? It could have come from anywhere. It might be the last survivor of a long-lost group of birds that once spread far and wide. Or maybe it&rsquo;s a distant cousin of other doves that got stranded on Cuba millions of years ago. Either way, it&rsquo;s a living relic, a rare window into the deep past.
One thing is certain: this mysterious bird needs help. With its dwindling numbers, the blue-headed quail-dove may be running out of time. Unlike the dodo, we still have a chance to protect it. And now that we know just how special it is, maybe we finally will.&nbsp;
