A tragic mudslide near National Highway 85 in Mannamkandam, Adimali, Kerala, claimed the life of a 48-year-old man and left his wife severely injured. The incident occurred late Saturday night, flattening at least eight houses in the residential colony.
Authorities had evacuated 22 families from the colony earlier due to the risk of a mudslide triggered by NH-85 widening work. However, the couple returned home before the disaster struck. Rescue teams, including local police and Fire and Rescue Services, conducted a five-hour operation to pull them from the debris. The man, identified as Biju, died, while his wife Sandhya, was hospitalised and later shifted to a hospital in Aluva.
Residents have raised concerns about the unscientific methods used in road widening, pointing to ongoing slope clearing without sufficient safety measures. Authorities are investigating the incident and have registered a case of unnatural death.
The affected families remain in relief camps, with many calling for government rehabilitation and urgent safety measures to prevent further landslides.
