India&rsquo;s wind energy capacity has surged to 51.5 gigawatts (GW), marking a 10.5% rise from 46.42 GW last year, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced on Global Wind Day.
Celebrating the milestone, Joshi stated on X, &ldquo;With 51.5 GW capacity and rising, we are moving towards an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, powered by innovation, green technology, and sustainable progress.&rdquo;
India&rsquo;s broader renewable energy landscape continues to expand rapidly. As of May 2025, total renewable capacity stood at 226.74 GW &mdash; up 17.13% from 193.58 GW a year earlier. Solar energy, in particular, has experienced explosive growth, increasing 31.49% year-over-year to 110.83 GW.
The nation&rsquo;s solar journey has been transformative &mdash; from just 2.82 GW in 2014 to over 110 GW today &mdash; supported by a rapidly developing domestic manufacturing base with 25 GW of solar cell and 2 GW of wafer production capacity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set an ambitious goal of achieving 500 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2030, as part of India&rsquo;s mission to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.
