Heavy rains triggered by the Northeast Monsoon battered several parts of Kerala on Sunday, leaving one person dead and many regions inundated, with Idukki district bearing the brunt of the damage.
The deceased, identified as 66-year-old Parappallil Thomas, lost his life late Saturday night when his two-wheeler was trapped under a mudslide near Vellaramkunnu in Idukki. 
He was reportedly returning home after closing his shop.
In Kumily, home to the famous Thekkady eco-tourism centre, severe waterlogging, damaged power lines, flooded houses, and vehicles being swept away were reported. 
The district administration has suspended all tourist activities citing safety concerns.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the intense rainfall was caused by a well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep, which is likely to develop into a depression within 24 hours.&nbsp;
The IMD has advised authorities to consider evacuations in vulnerable and flood-prone regions.
Six districts were placed under an orange alert on Sunday, but only Ernakulam and Idukki remain under the same alert on Monday, while the others have been downgraded to yellow alert.
The Mullaperiyar dam shutters were opened to regulate water levels following heavy inflows, and residents living near rivers and streams have been urged to relocate to safer areas.
Apart from Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Kannur also received heavy rainfall, leading to flooding and crop damage in several low-lying regions.
