Torrential rains triggered multiple flash floods and landslides in Himachal Pradesh&rsquo;s Mandi district, damaging homes, blocking highways, and washing away vehicles. Fortunately, no loss of life has been reported so far.
The Mandi-Kullu stretch of the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway was severely affected, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded after landslides near Jhalogi. The alternative route via Kataula-Kamand has also been disrupted by multiple slides, though authorities are working to restore access for light vehicles.
Among the worst-hit areas are Panarsa, Takoli, and Nagwain, with extensive damage reported. The Pandoh Dam authorities issued an alert for excess water release after heavy rainfall in Takoli.
In Mandi town, the revered Panchvaktra temple, an ASI-protected monument dedicated to Lord Shiva, continues to stand firm despite swirling floodwaters of the Beas River, echoing its resilience during the 2023 floods.
Elsewhere, the Pong Dam in Kangra reached alarming levels at 1,379.98 feet, forcing the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) to release over 57,000 cusecs of water &mdash; the highest this monsoon season. Alerts have been issued in Kangra (Himachal) and Hoshiarpur (Punjab) for residents in low-lying areas.
In Sirmaur district, water released from the Giri Dam triggered panic among downstream communities, while landslides also damaged roads near Tattapani on the Shimla-Karsog route.
According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, over 300 roads remain blocked, including key highways in Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, Chamba, Shimla, and Kinnaur.
The Himachal Pradesh Meteorological Department has issued yellow weather warnings for several districts, including Shimla, Mandi, Kangra, Chamba, and Sirmaur, predicting heavy rainfall at isolated locations until August 19.
