A dense layer of smog blanketed the national capital on Monday as Delhi&rsquo;s Air Quality Index (AQI) climbed to 396, placing it in the "very poor" category and inching dangerously close to "severe" levels.&nbsp;
The rise comes after parts of Delhi-NCR recorded AQI readings above 500 on Saturday.
Visibility dropped sharply across several areas as the toxic haze thickened, prompting fresh health advisories from authorities.
Neighbouring NCR cities also reported deteriorating conditions, with Gurugram recording an AQI of 370, Noida 372, Faridabad 358, Ghaziabad 355 and Greater Noida 342.
While most localities in Delhi remained between 300 and 400, several regions crossed the 400 threshold, entering the "severe" zone.&nbsp;
Officials warned that pollution levels could worsen further if wind speed remains low.
Meteorologists attributed the spike to calm winds, low temperatures and increased humidity, which trap pollutants near the ground. 
The winter inversion effect, where cold air remains trapped beneath warmer layers, has also hindered the dispersion of particulate matter.
Environmental experts noted that elevated levels of PM2.5, the most harmful pollutant capable of penetrating deep into the lungs, continue to pose significant health risks. 
Vehicular emissions, construction dust, industrial activity and local biomass burning remain major contributors.
Healthcare professionals advised residents to minimise outdoor exposure, particularly for children, senior citizens and individuals with respiratory or cardiac conditions. 
Prolonged exposure to current AQI levels can lead to breathing difficulties, eye irritation, reduced lung function and an increased risk of heart complications.
With AQI readings edging toward the "severe" zone, Delhi remains under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). 
Authorities may enforce stricter curbs if pollution levels rise further, including construction bans, restrictions on polluting vehicles and suspension of certain industrial operations.
Experts stressed the need for long-term solutions to Delhi&rsquo;s recurring winter pollution crisis, including tighter vehicle emission controls, expanded public transport networks, dust management at construction sites and coordinated regional efforts to tackle external pollution sources.
As the capital confronts yet another severe smog episode, residents may face worsening conditions in the coming weeks, typically the most polluted period of the year, unless weather patterns shift and emissions decline.
