Cyclonic storm Montha continues to move steadily toward the Andhra Pradesh coast and is expected to make landfall near Kakinada, between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, on Tuesday evening.
In an interview with NDTV, Dr. M Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), said that Andhra Pradesh will be the most affected state, followed by Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
He added that heavy rainfall will continue across Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Tamil Nadu from October 28 to 30.
The IMD has warned that Montha will hit Andhra Pradesh as a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds reaching 90&ndash;100 kmph.&nbsp;
After making landfall, the cyclone is expected to weaken slightly and move toward Odisha, Dr. Mohapatra said.
Currently, the cyclone is positioned about 420 km from Chennai, 500 km from Visakhapatnam, and 450 km from Kakinada, moving at a speed of 15 km per hour.&nbsp;
Strong winds and heavy rainfall have already begun lashing the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, prompting authorities to remain on high alert.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the situation from the Real Time Governance Society Centre at the State Secretariat, assuring citizens that the administration is fully prepared to handle any emergency.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke with the Chief Minister over the phone and promised full central assistance to the state.
To handle the impact, 22 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed across the five states likely to be affected &mdash; Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and Chhattisgarh.
Officials estimate that the cyclone could impact 1,419 villages and 44 towns in Andhra Pradesh.&nbsp;
Residents have been urged to stay indoors, while people living in coastal zones are being shifted to relief camps.
With the sea turning rough and the possibility of high tidal waves, fishermen have been advised not to venture out, and beaches have been closed for tourists.
Meanwhile, the Odisha government has started evacuating people from vulnerable areas, especially across eight southern districts where a red alert has been declared.&nbsp;
Light rain is already being reported in these areas, and all districts have been put on alert in case Montha changes its course.
