The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are on high alert as a cyclonic circulation develops over the Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to intensify from October 21, bringing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across the region until October 25. Local authorities have issued warnings for residents, tourists, and fishermen to exercise caution during this period.
Heavy rainfall between 7-11 cm is expected at select locations in the Nicobar Islands, accompanied by thunderstorms with gusty winds of 40-50 kmph and lightning. Squally conditions with surface wind speeds of 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, are likely over the Andaman Sea from October 22-23. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea, and boat operators are urged to exercise extreme caution.
In addition, the India Meteorological Department predicts a low-pressure area forming over the Southeast Bay of Bengal around October 21. This may trigger significant rainfall in Tamil Nadu, affecting districts such as Erode, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Madurai, Thanjavur, Cuddalore, and Nagapattinam. Chennai and surrounding areas have already received heavy rainfall, with Medavakkam recording 102mm and Kotagiri in Nilgiris 137mm on October 19.
Residents, tourists, and fishermen are advised to follow all safety guidelines issued by local authorities and avoid unnecessary travel into the sea during the next few days.
