A powerful 5.7-magnitude earthquake shook Dhaka and several regions of Bangladesh on Friday, leaving at least three people dead and ten others injured. The tremors, which sparked panic across the capital, led to a tragic collapse incident in the Koshaituli area of Armanitola.
According to officials, a brick-built railing and bamboo scaffolding from a five-storey building fell onto pedestrians during the quake. Lalbagh Division Deputy Commissioner Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami confirmed that three people lost their lives, while one person remains in critical condition.
Banshal Police Station Duty Officer Ashish Kumar Ghosh said the victims were walking along the road when the structure collapsed. Two died instantly, while the third succumbed to injuries at Mitford Hospital. Identification of some of the victims is still underway.
A local resident, Imran Hossain, told The Business Standard that a mobile network tower on a rooftop toppled onto a neighbouring building after the quake, triggering debris to fall onto people below, leading to the fatalities.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department reported that the epicentre was located at Madhabdi in Narsingdi district. As the ground trembled for several seconds, residents rushed outdoors in fear. Minor cracks were reported in buildings across different neighbourhoods.
Tremors were also felt in Chandpur, Nilphamari, Sitakunda, Sirajganj, Narayanganj, Barisal, Bogura, Patuakhali, and Moulvibazar.
