A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off Alaska&rsquo;s southern coast on Wednesday afternoon, prompting tsunami warnings along parts of the Alaska Peninsula.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit at 12:37 p.m. local time, with its epicentre located about 87 km south of Sand Point. The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of 20.1 km, increasing the potential for significant surface-level effects.
The National Tsunami Warning Centre (NTWC) issued a tsunami alert shortly after, stating, &ldquo;A tsunami has been confirmed and some impacts are expected.&rdquo; The warning applies to South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula&rsquo;s Pacific coasts &mdash; from Kennedy Entrance (near Homer) to Unimak Pass (close to Unalaska).
No tsunami warnings have been issued for areas outside the immediate Alaska coastline.
Alaska lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire &mdash; a hotspot for seismic activity. It has witnessed several large earthquakes, most notably the catastrophic 9.2-magnitude quake in March 1964, the strongest ever recorded in North America.
In July 2023, a 7.2-magnitude quake struck a nearby region but caused minimal damage.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise residents to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions.
