A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao, Philippines, on Friday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GZF). The tremor is the latest in a string of strong earthquakes that have shaken the Southeast Asian nation in recent weeks.
The quake caused damage to several school buildings and a hospital, while also disrupting electricity in nearby areas. A tsunami warning was briefly issued but later lifted after coastal residents were safely evacuated.
This comes just over a week after a massive 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit the same region at a depth of 62 kilometres, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
In Davao City, home to more than 5 million residents, schools were evacuated as precautionary measures were taken. The earlier quake on October 10 had prompted authorities to warn of potentially &ldquo;destructive&rdquo; tsunami waves, urging people to move to higher ground immediately.
The Philippines, located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, frequently experiences earthquakes due to intense tectonic activity in the region.
