War 2, Yash Raj Films&rsquo; latest entry in the Spy Universe, is facing box office turbulence despite a strong recovery on Independence Day. Directed by Ayan Mukerji and starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani, the film crossed the ₹200 crore mark worldwide in just three days, but sustaining momentum remains a challenge.
In India, War 2 collected ₹142 crore net (₹170 crore gross) in its first three days. Saturday, however, brought a sharp decline of 42%, with earnings of ₹33.25 crore compared to Friday&rsquo;s ₹57.35 crore. Both Hindi and Telugu versions saw similar drops despite the weekend.
Overseas, the spy thriller fared better, bringing in just over $5 million (₹45 crore), pushing its worldwide gross to ₹215 crore in three days. With a reported budget of ₹400 crore, the film still has considerable ground to cover before breaking even.
The box office clash with Rajinikanth&rsquo;s Coolie has also impacted performance. While War 2 outpaced Coolie on Friday, the latter bounced back on Saturday with ₹38.60 crore, surpassing War 2&rsquo;s ₹33.50 crore.
Despite mixed reviews, the cast remains optimistic. Hrithik Roshan shared his gratitude on Instagram, saying fan celebrations in theatres made his &ldquo;heart fuller,&rdquo; while Jr NTR thanked audiences for their support and passion.
As part of the expanding YRF Spy Universe, which includes Pathaan and Tiger, War 2 also teases future crossovers. The post-credits scene features Bobby Deol, hinting at the next instalment, Alpha.
The film&rsquo;s Sunday performance will be crucial in deciding whether it can build fresh momentum or continue its downward slide.
