Of those born into gutters, narrow streets, long lines for water, and meals made of leftovers? Those who inherit humiliation instead of heritage and are taught early that passion doesn&rsquo;t pay rent.
It began centuries ago with the varna system, a social order that caged labour in caste. Those who cleaned the streets, the drains, and the homes were stripped of dignity and declared untouchable. The system survived, adapted, and modernised, but its cruelty never left. Even today, in the glass cities of our progress, caste still stains the hands that clean our filth and build our futures.
But what about their hearts? Their dreams? Their laughter?
Dr B.R. Ambedkar, Jyotiba Phule, and Savitribai Phule lit the first lamps in this long night of injustice. And today, that flame burns through artists like Maulikraj Shrimali, dramatist, scholar, Dalit artist-activist, and founder of the Whistle Blower Theatre Group. Through theatre, he doesn&rsquo;t just tell stories; he dismantles silence.
When asked about the inspiration behind the play, Shrimali said,
&ldquo;The inspiration was obviously Dinesh Kaka and Aalo&hellip; he was my childhood friend. His pet name was Aalo because when he was a child, he used to go collecting leftovers and would shout &lsquo;વાળુ આલો (Vaalu Aalo: give leftovers)&rsquo;. We teased him by that name until one day he told me why he was called that. Apart from these two, it&rsquo;s the community I grew up with, the people around me, and the struggles of those who stayed with the Dalit movement and the guilt of those who moved out to earn. Some parts are inspired by real incidents a Dalit boy beaten for having a moustache, a Dalit groom attacked for riding a horse. The list is never-ending.&rdquo;
Shrimali&rsquo;s direction was tender yet furious; each silence was a scream, each flicker of light a confession. The dialogues hit hard, unfiltered and real. When a character says, &ldquo;Hu chu Aalo,&rdquo; it is not just identification; it is rebellion. And the line &ldquo;વાંચો, વિચારો અને વિક્સો (Read, Think, and Develop)&rdquo; echoes Ambedkar&rsquo;s eternal call, a reminder that liberation begins with awareness.
Talking about the evolution of the play, Shrimali reflected,
&ldquo;We have performed 80 shows of Urfe Aalo, but those were shorter versions. The full-length one, we&rsquo;ve performed only twice. Relaunching it after 8 years was important because nothing has changed, except the dying authenticity of Gujarati theatre. I wanted to revive the kind of theatre that stood beyond money, roles, and fame. Gujarati plays often show 3BHK flats or pols&hellip; no one talks about chalis. For the first time, we have Baba Ambedkar&rsquo;s statue on stage, and the set represents the spaces I grew up in the dialect, the colours, the lights of my childhood.&rdquo;
He added that every character in the play breathes reality&nbsp;
&ldquo;Bajrang is based on an uncle from my extended family, Aalo was my friend, and Aalo&rsquo;s father was inspired by Dinesh Kaka. I wanted to show Dalit life as it is their joy, finesse, and celebration, alongside the pain of those who clean our drains and die doing so. These issues aren&rsquo;t just personal; they&rsquo;re policy-level. Society must change the way it looks at caste, the way it treats these people. Because at the end of the day, they are humans too.&rdquo;
Urfe Aalo is not a tragic theatre; it is a protest wrapped in poetry. Amid caste, hunger, and survival, it finds humour rough, raw, and resilient. It finds love not in luxury, but in the shared bidi, the stolen smile, the fragile dream that one day, dignity won&rsquo;t depend on birth.
After the show, the audience was visibly shaken. One upper-caste viewer said, &ldquo;I always complained that Dalits get too many perks. But now I understand the privilege I&rsquo;ve grown up with and what they&rsquo;ve been denied.&rdquo; Another Dalit woman, now educated and settled, confessed, &ldquo;Watching this play reminded me that somewhere, while living this new life, I forgot to fight for us.&rdquo;
Playwright Saumya Joshi praised the production, saying, &ldquo;We need more such plays, and this must be marketed in a way that it reaches more people.&rdquo;
As one viewer aptly put it, &ldquo;Such policy-level issues are often flat and factual. But this&hellip; this was emotional, real, and true.&rdquo;
When the lights dimmed, applause came late. The silence that followed was heavier than any sound, the kind that makes you confront your comfort, your complicity. Because Urfe Aalo doesn&rsquo;t end when the curtain falls; it seeps into your conscience, asking quietly, &ldquo;Who gets to dream in this country?&rdquo;
In the end, Urfe Aalo reminded Ahmedabad and all of us that art isn&rsquo;t a pastime. It&rsquo;s a pulse. A protest. A reminder that the drains may divide us, but dreams still dare to rise.
