Public broadcaster Prasar Bharati is reviewing a proposal to air a film titled Tillotoma, inspired by the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata&rsquo;s RG Kar Medical College in August 2024. The case, which triggered massive protests across West Bengal, is currently being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Confirming the development, Prasar Bharati CEO Gaurav Dwivedi said the proposal for the film is &ldquo;under evaluation.&rdquo; However, the victim&rsquo;s family has opposed the project, stating that they only seek justice, not publicity.&nbsp;
The film will be directed by Ujjwal Chatterjee, who previously helmed Escape from Taliban and won a National Award for Gondi in 1992. Tillotoma will be told from the perspective of the victim&rsquo;s mother, with Rupa Ganguly, former Rajya Sabha MP and actor, playing the lead role.
Chatterjee said he has asked the victim&rsquo;s family for consent to use the real name; if denied, the film will proceed under a different title. He also claimed that Prasar Bharati chairman Navneet Sehgal had encouraged the project, though Sehgal declined to comment.
Given the sensitive nature of the case, Chatterjee plans to shoot primarily in New Delhi due to expected opposition in Kolkata. Filming is tentatively scheduled to start in December 2025 and wrap by January 2026, with a planned release before the Bengal Assembly elections.
Chatterjee further alleged that the project has support from some members of the BJP in West Bengal, including Agnimitra Paul, who confirmed her personal connection to the victim&rsquo;s family. However, BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya denied any official party involvement.
Paul stated she was trying to convince the victim&rsquo;s parents to allow the film, emphasising that it aims to &ldquo;bring the truth to light&rdquo; about the alleged mishandling of the case by state authorities.
