Ozzy Osbourne, the iconic frontman of Black Sabbath and a pioneer of heavy metal music, has died at the age of 76 after a prolonged struggle with Parkinson&rsquo;s disease, his family confirmed on Tuesday.
In an official statement, the Osbourne family said: &ldquo;It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love.&rdquo;
Osbourne&rsquo;s death comes just weeks after what was billed as Black Sabbath&rsquo;s final reunion show, &ldquo;Back to the Beginning,&rdquo; held in his hometown of Birmingham, England&mdash;a massive tribute featuring acts like Metallica, Guns N&rsquo; Roses, and Pantera.
Diagnosed with Parkinson&rsquo;s in 2020, Osbourne retired from touring in 2023, citing spinal injuries from a 2018 accident. Still, he continued to release music, including two critically acclaimed albums: &ldquo;Ordinary Man&rdquo; and &ldquo;Patient Number 9.&rdquo;
Born John Michael Osbourne on December 3, 1948, he rose from a working-class Birmingham background to become one of the most recognisable figures in music. As Black Sabbath&rsquo;s frontman (1969&ndash;1979), Osbourne helped define heavy metal with anthems like &ldquo;Paranoid,&rdquo; &ldquo;Iron Man,&rdquo; and &ldquo;War Pigs.&rdquo;
After being fired from the band, he launched a solo career that eclipsed his former band's commercial success. He also became a pop culture icon through Ozzfest and his family&rsquo;s hit MTV reality series, The Osbournes.
A complex figure&mdash;battling addiction, controversy, and ill health&mdash;Ozzy remained beloved by fans around the world. He sold over 100 million albums globally.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Osbourne and five children.
