Homebound, India&rsquo;s official entry to the Oscars in the Best International Feature category, had a disappointing start at the domestic box office. 
The Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor starrer managed to collect only ₹30 lakh on its opening day, far below the half-crore mark.
Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, the film explores the childhood bond between a Muslim and a Dalit, who grow up aspiring to secure a police job that promises them dignity long denied due to their surnames. 
The story is adapted from journalist Basharat Peer&rsquo;s article Taking Amrit Home (also titled A Friendship, a Pandemic and a Death Beside the Highway).
Homebound had its world premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, followed by a screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. 
Despite the critical acclaim, the film&rsquo;s theatrical debut in India has been underwhelming.
The project boasts an impressive lineup behind the scenes as well, with Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese serving as executive producer, and Karan Johar along with Adar Poonawalla backing the film as producers.
