Director Suparn Varma&rsquo;s courtroom drama Haq, starring Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi in lead roles, is set to make its OTT debut soon. Inspired by the life and historic legal battle of Shah Bano Begum, the film will begin streaming on Netflix from January 2.
Netflix India announced the release date on Wednesday through its official social media handles, sharing the film&rsquo;s poster and confirming its arrival on the platform. With this release, viewers who missed Haq during its theatrical run will now be able to watch the socially relevant drama from home.
Haq draws inspiration from the landmark 1985 Shah Bano case, in which the Supreme Court upheld the right of divorced Muslim women to maintenance. The film uses this legal backdrop to tell a personal story of resilience, justice and courage.
The narrative follows Shazia, portrayed by Yami Gautam Dhar, a simple and uneducated woman married to Abbas Khan, a well-known advocate played by Emraan Hashmi. Shazia&rsquo;s life takes a drastic turn when her husband suddenly brings home a second wife and later dissolves their marriage through triple talaq. The story then focuses on Shazia&rsquo;s determined legal fight to claim her rights in court.
The film has been widely noted for its performances, particularly Yami Gautam Dhar&rsquo;s portrayal of a woman navigating betrayal, emotional trauma and the justice system. Emraan Hashmi appears in a layered role that drives much of the courtroom conflict.
With its strong performances and socially relevant theme, Haq is expected to find a wider audience following its Netflix release.
