Born on January 1, 1941, in Jaipur, Rajasthan, into a middle-class Sindhi family, Asrani&rsquo;s career spanned more than five decades and included over 350 films in Hindi and Gujarati cinema.
Asrani achieved iconic status thanks to his memorable role as the eccentric jailor in the landmark film Sholay, his comic timing and quirky expressions making that character the stuff of legend.
Beyond Hindi films, Asrani also enjoyed popularity in Gujarat&rsquo;s film industry, starring in Gujarati films as a lead actor in the 1970s and 1980s, affirming his connection with audiences across language lines.
