Veteran Marathi and Hindi actor Achyut Potdar passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025, at the age of 91. He breathed his last at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, where he was admitted due to health complications. The exact cause of his death has not been disclosed. His funeral will be held on August 19 in Thane.
The news of his demise surfaced after a tribute was shared on the official Instagram handle of a private channel, sparking an outpouring of condolences from fans and the film fraternity.
In a career spanning more than four decades, Potdar carved a unique space in both Hindi and Marathi cinema. He appeared in over 125 films, balancing commercial blockbusters with critically acclaimed titles. His rich filmography includes classics such as Aakrosh, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai, Ardh Satya, Tezaab, Parinda, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Dilwale, Rangeela, Vaastav, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Dabangg 2, and Ventilator.
Potdar also left an indelible mark on television with memorable roles in Bharat Ek Khoj, All The Best (Doordarshan), Pradhan Mantri (Zee TV), Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo (Zee TV), Aahat (Sony TV), Wagle Ki Duniya, and Majha Hoshil Na (Zee Marathi).
Audiences fondly remember him as the strict professor in Aamir Khan&rsquo;s 3 Idiots, where his line &ldquo;Arey kehna kya chahte ho&rdquo; turned into a cult-pop culture reference, celebrated on meme pages and social media.
Potdar&rsquo;s journey to cinema was unconventional. Before pursuing acting, he worked as a professor in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, then served in the Indian Army, retiring as a captain in 1967. He later joined Indian Oil Corporation, where he worked as an executive for nearly 25 years before retiring in 1992. It was only at the age of 44 that he seriously stepped into Bollywood, driven by his lifelong passion for acting.
His passing marks the end of an era for Indian cinema and television. His dedication, versatility, and memorable performances will continue to inspire generations of actors and entertainers.
