In a video message shared after days of backlash, the Oscar-winning musician said he has always sought to serve the country through his music.
Calling India his teacher, inspiration and home, Rahman said music has been his way of celebrating and honouring the nation&rsquo;s culture. He acknowledged that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood but stressed that his purpose has always been to uplift and unite through art. He said he has never wished to cause pain and hoped his sincerity would be understood.
Rahman highlighted several projects to underline his commitment to India&rsquo;s cultural diversity. He spoke about presenting Jhalaa at the WAVES summit in front of the Prime Minister, collaborating with young Naga musicians, creating a string orchestra, mentoring the Sunshine Orchestra, building Secret Mountain, India&rsquo;s first multicultural virtual band, and scoring Ramayana alongside composer Hans Zimmer, an opportunity he said he was honoured to receive.
He described India as a country that allows freedom of expression and celebrates multicultural voices, adding that each creative journey has strengthened his sense of purpose. Rahman concluded his message by expressing gratitude to the nation and reaffirming his commitment to music that honours the past. The video ended with visuals of a packed cricket stadium singing along to his iconic song Maa Tujhe Salaam/Vande Mataram.
The controversy began after Rahman&rsquo;s interview with BBC Asian Network, where he was asked if he had ever faced prejudice in Bollywood as a Tamil composer. He said he personally did not experience it directly but suggested that changes in power dynamics over the past few years may have impacted creative freedom. He also remarked that certain narratives in cinema were increasingly driven by divisiveness, including criticism of the film Chhaava.
Rahman&rsquo;s clarification has since drawn wide attention, with supporters pointing to his long-standing contribution to Indian music and cultural representation.
