The Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) delivered a sweeping performance in Kerala&rsquo;s local body elections, securing a dominant share of seats across corporations, municipalities, block panchayats and gram panchayats, in a verdict widely seen as a strong anti-incumbency signal against the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government. Adding to the political churn, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) stunned the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) by winning the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, ending 45 years of uninterrupted Left control in the state capital.
The elections, held in two phases on December 9 and 11, covered six corporations, 14 district panchayats, 86 municipalities, 152 block panchayats and 941 gram panchayats. The results are being viewed as a key indicator of public mood ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls.
For the UDF, the outcome marks a significant morale boost. Senior Congress leaders described the mandate as decisive, saying it reflected growing public confidence in the alliance and a desire for accountable and responsive governance. Party leaders stressed that the focus would remain on addressing everyday concerns of citizens and ensuring transparent administration.
In Thiruvananthapuram, the NDA&rsquo;s victory emerged as the most striking development. Of the 101 wards in the corporation, the NDA won 50, while the LDF secured 29, the UDF 19 and Independents two. The result marked the first time in over four decades that the Left failed to retain control of the capital&rsquo;s civic body, signalling a major shift in the city&rsquo;s political landscape.
While congratulating the UDF on its statewide performance, leaders also acknowledged the NDA&rsquo;s breakthrough in the capital as a notable change driven by voters seeking an alternative to long-standing governance patterns. The victory was hailed by the BJP as a watershed moment, with party leaders asserting that it reflected public faith in their development agenda for the state.
For the LDF, Kozhikode Corporation offered the only major consolation, where it managed to win 34 of the 76 seats. Left leaders admitted the setback was unexpected, though they rejected claims of widespread anti-incumbency and argued that broader mass support for the LDF remained intact. They also expressed concern over the growing influence of communal politics and the NDA&rsquo;s rise in the capital.
Overall, the local body poll results have redrawn Kerala&rsquo;s political map at the grassroots level, strengthening the UDF ahead of Assembly elections while giving the NDA renewed momentum through its historic win in Thiruvananthapuram.
