Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia financed his son&rsquo;s higher education in Canada by taking personal loans amounting to ₹1.54 crore in his wife&rsquo;s name, as revealed in his affidavit filed for the Jangpura Assembly constituency. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader&rsquo;s filing details education loans obtained from three individuals for his son&rsquo;s studies.
Sisodia, a journalist-turned-politician, is currently embroiled in a money-laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in Delhi&rsquo;s excise policy. According to the affidavit, the loans were taken in the name of his wife, Seema Sisodia, who is a homemaker and suffers from multiple sclerosis, requiring ongoing care.
The loans, totalling ₹1.54 crore, were provided by three individuals: Romesh Chander Mittal (₹86 lakh), Guneet Arora (₹58 lakh), and Deepali (₹10 lakh). These funds were used to support the education of their son, Meer Sisodia, who is identified as a dependent in the affidavit. The document also discloses three accounts opened at Scotiabank, 392 Bay Street, Toronto, specifically for managing his son&rsquo;s educational expenses. Additionally, it reports foreign exchange assets amounting to approximately CAD 3,980 (₹2.4 lakh).
The disclosure has sparked criticism from Opposition leaders, particularly the BJP, which questioned the terms of the loans in light of the Sisodia family&rsquo;s modest declared assets. &ldquo;How has he managed to secure an education loan in his wife&rsquo;s name that is nearly three times their total assets of ₹57 lakh?&rdquo; an Opposition leader asked, alleging potential foreign interference in funding.
Sisodia&rsquo;s affidavit lists his income sources as his ministerial salary, rental income, and author royalties. His wife&rsquo;s income is noted as coming from rental earnings. The current filing contrasts with Sisodia&rsquo;s 2013 election affidavit, which did not include any declared loans and listed an annual personal income of ₹5.21 lakh alongside family assets worth ₹41 lakh.
This time, Sisodia will contest from the Jangpura constituency, diverging from his usual Patparganj seat in East Delhi. His opponents include BJP&rsquo;s Tarvinder Singh Marwah and Congress&rsquo; Farhad Suri. Delhi&rsquo;s 70-seat Assembly elections are scheduled for February 5, with vote counting set for February 8. The AAP, which won 67 seats in 2015 and 62 in 2020, aims for a fourth consecutive term.
The affidavit&rsquo;s revelations are expected to remain a focal point of political debate as the election approaches.
