Bihar is witnessing the first phase of its 2025 Assembly elections today, with 121 out of 243 constituencies voting across 18 districts. The polls mark a high-stakes triangular contest between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the opposition Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance), and Prashant Kishor&rsquo;s newly launched Jan Suraaj Party.
Polling began at 7 am and will conclude at 6 pm in most areas, while some booths will close by 5 pm. By 9 am, the state recorded a voter turnout of 13.13%. Among districts, Saharsa reported the highest participation at 15.27%, while Lakhisarai saw the lowest at 7%. Patna recorded a 11.22% turnout by 9 am.
A total of 3.75 crore voters are deciding the fate of 1,314 candidates in this phase. Key constituencies include Tarapur, where Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary (BJP) is contesting, and Raghopur, where RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav is seeking re-election. His brother Tej Pratap Yadav is contesting from Mahua. JD(U)&rsquo;s Anant Singh is fighting from Mokama, even as he remains in jail.
Among the 18 districts voting today are Patna, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Vaishali, Begusarai, Nalanda, and Bhojpur. Voting is being conducted across 45,341 polling stations, including 36,733 in rural areas.
Of the total 3.75 crore voters, 10.72 lakh are first-time electors. This includes 7.37 lakh voters aged 18&ndash;19 and 6,736 aged above 100 years. The NDA comprises JD(U), BJP, LJP (Ram Vilas), Hindustani Awam Morcha, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha. The Mahagathbandhan alliance includes RJD, Congress, CPI, CPI(ML), CPM, and VIP.
The Jan Suraaj Party, led by Prashant Kishor, is contesting all 243 seats in its political debut, adding a third front to Bihar&rsquo;s intense electoral battle.
