Consider the average citizen of Karnataka: the farmer toiling for 10 hours under the scorching sun, the labourer working an eight-hour shift, or the office employee putting in their full day's work. None of these constituents&mdash;the true sovereigns of our democracy&mdash;are afforded the luxury of institutionalized napping during their workday. No labor law passed by these very legislators mandates employers to provide recliners for mid-day rest.

Our elected representatives already enjoy a host of privileges&mdash;free housing in the state capital, subsidized meals, vehicle allowances, and various other perquisites. Yet, these amenities seem insufficient to keep them engaged in the democratic process for even the meager 33 days per year that the assembly meets.

The irony is palpable. Those who craft laws governing the working conditions of millions cannot themselves remain alert and engaged during their brief legislative sessions without the aid of luxury furniture. What does this say about their commitment to the public they serve?

These discussions deserve the undivided attention of those elected to represent the people's interests&mdash;not representatives who need to be coaxed to stay awake with creature comforts.

Perhaps it's time for our MLAs to remember that they serve at the pleasure of the electorate&mdash;citizens who rarely have the opportunity to take a "power nap" during their workday, much less on custom furniture provided at public expense.
