Investments under India&rsquo;s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes have surpassed Rs 1.76 lakh crore, marking a significant step in the country&rsquo;s transformation into a global manufacturing powerhouse. The schemes have boosted output, exports, and employment, reducing India&rsquo;s dependence on imports and strengthening domestic manufacturing.
By supporting sunrise sectors, promoting innovation, and anchoring global supply chains locally, PLI initiatives are strategically enhancing India&rsquo;s manufacturing base. Total sales by PLI participants have exceeded Rs 16.5 lakh crore, with key gains in electronics, pharmaceuticals, automotive, and textiles. The schemes have also generated over 12 lakh direct and indirect jobs, while spurring development in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
With an incentive outlay of Rs 1.97 lakh crore, 806 applications have been approved across 14 sectors, reflecting strong industry confidence. The initiatives aim to raise manufacturing&rsquo;s contribution to 25% of GDP and establish India as a leading industrial economy.
Electronics has emerged as a flagship sector, with production surging 146% from Rs 2.13 lakh crore in FY 2020-21 to Rs 5.25 lakh crore in FY 2024-25. Major smartphone manufacturers have shifted production to India, making the country a key mobile phone manufacturing hub.
The automobile and auto components sector has attracted Rs 67,690 crore in committed investments, generating over 28,884 jobs. The PLI schemes are also supporting India&rsquo;s transition to a global EV and clean-tech hub under the FAME initiative.
In food processing, 171 PLI applications have been approved with investments exceeding Rs 8,910 crore, complementing initiatives like PM-FME and PMKSY to modernize units, enhance branding, and boost value-added exports.
The pharmaceutical sector has shifted from import dependence to net exports of bulk drugs worth Rs 2,280 crore in FY 2024-25. Sales under the PLI scheme crossed Rs 2.66 lakh crore in three years, including exports of Rs 1.70 lakh crore, with domestic value addition at 83.7%.
High-efficiency solar PV module production has attracted Rs 48,120 crore in investments, generating nearly 38,500 direct jobs. The semiconductor sector is also growing, with six projects in progress and four additional units approved under the India Semiconductor Mission, creating thousands of skilled jobs and strengthening the electronics ecosystem.
Textile PLI schemes, approved with Rs 10,683 crore, have boosted man-made fibre and technical textile production and exports, while white goods initiatives aim to increase domestic value addition from 20&ndash;25% to 75&ndash;80% by 2028&ndash;29.
The PLI schemes are thus positioning India as a global manufacturing hub, driving investment, job creation, and technological advancement across strategic sectors.
