Official data released on Wednesday showed that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government has performed significantly better in controlling retail inflation &mdash; particularly in food and fuel &mdash; compared to the UPA era.
According to a post by BJP leader Amit Malviya on the social media platform X, &ldquo;Double-digit inflation (over 10 per cent) seen during the UPA era is no longer a concern, reflecting effective governance and price control over the past decade.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Since 2014, retail inflation has not crossed 8 per cent, in contrast to the UPA&rsquo;s 2004&ndash;14 average of 8.1 per cent, with a peak of 10.4 per cent during 2009&ndash;14,&rdquo; he noted, citing official data.
During the January 2012 to April 2014 period under the UPA government, inflation remained above 9 per cent in 22 out of 28 months, reaching double digits on nine occasions.
Malviya, who heads the BJP&rsquo;s Information Technology cell, highlighted that retail inflation in April 2025 dropped to 3.16 per cent &mdash; the lowest in nearly six years &mdash; continuing its downward trend.
For FY 2024&ndash;25, retail inflation stood at 4.6 per cent, the lowest since 2018&ndash;19, marking three consecutive years of decline.
&ldquo;Overall, the data indicates improved inflation management, particularly in food and fuel, under the NDA government compared to the UPA era,&rdquo; he observed.
The BJP-led NDA government has managed to contain inflation through several concrete measures, including the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, which provides free rations to over 80 crore citizens (extended until 2029), and the launch of &lsquo;Bharat&rsquo; brands that offer cereals and pulses at affordable rates via NAFED, NCCF and Kendriya Bhandar.
Additionally, under the Price Stabilisation Fund, a dynamic buffer stock of pulses is maintained and strategically released to ensure availability and affordability for consumers.
The government has also been actively offloading wheat and rice from the central pool under the Open Market Sale Scheme, enhancing market supply to regulate retail prices.
With respect to fuel, both LPG subsidies and cylinder prices have been adjusted to benefit PM Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries as well as regular consumers. Notably, the price of non-subsidised LPG cylinders was reduced by ₹100 per 14.2 kg cylinder, effective from 9 March 2024.
