India&rsquo;s economy is expanding at a robust 6.5% annual growth rate and is poised to become an $8 trillion economy, said Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri in an interview with IANS on Wednesday.
&ldquo;India has already doubled its economy from $2 trillion to $4 trillion, and with our current momentum, we are headed toward the $8 trillion mark,&rdquo; he stated, adding that this growth benefits every citizen through higher per capita income, increased trade, and stronger global ties.
Puri also noted that India&rsquo;s rising economic stature would boost its global credibility and diplomatic influence.
Backing his outlook, the IMF&rsquo;s April 2025 World Economic Outlook projects India&rsquo;s nominal GDP to reach $4.187 trillion, narrowly overtaking Japan&rsquo;s $4.186 trillion. By 2027, India&rsquo;s GDP is expected to surpass $5 trillion, and by 2028, it could rise to $5.58 trillion, outpacing Germany&rsquo;s $5.25 trillion.
The minister also addressed public concerns over fuel supply amid Middle East tensions. He reassured that India has ample reserves of petrol and diesel, and there is no cause for panic despite the Israel-Iran conflict.
&ldquo;People do not need to worry. We have sufficient stock, and the supply chain remains intact,&rdquo; Puri said.
