Women are playing an increasingly prominent role in India&rsquo;s tax ecosystem, with new research by the State Bank of India (SBI) revealing that every 1 in 5 GST taxpayers in the country now includes at least one woman.
The report, published by SBI&rsquo;s Economic Research Department, highlights a growing trend of female-led participation in formal business operations under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. It also notes that 14% of all active GST registered entities in India are&nbsp;entirely women-led, based on their business constitution.
This surge in participation is especially visible in Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) and private limited companies, sectors that have seen a stronger push towards formalisation and structural professionalism.
&ldquo;The data reflects not just tax compliance but women&rsquo;s growing footprint in the economic landscape,&rdquo; said Dr. Soumya Kanti Ghosh, Group Chief Economic Advisor at SBI. He added that this trend mirrors a broader pattern, where women now account for 15% of total income tax filers and 40% of overall bank deposits.
The report also emphasized India&rsquo;s strong GST performance in recent years. Average monthly GST collections have doubled, crossing ₹2 lakh crore, while six states have now exceeded ₹1 lakh crore in annual collections. Notably, the top five states contribute 41% to the total GST revenue.
Interestingly, some high GSDP states like&nbsp;Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh show a lower share of active GST taxpayers compared to their GDP contribution. On the other hand, states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Gujarat are showing a higher than expected share of taxpayers, indicating strong potential for further GST penetration.
As GST completed eight years since rollout in July, SBI&rsquo;s analysis affirms that the system has helped foster a more inclusive, efficient, and transparent tax structure, one where gender representation is visibly evolving.
By FY25, SBI projects a strong convergence in GST participation across states and business types, signaling a more equitable and broad based tax base driven by both economic and gender inclusion.
