<h3 data-start="202" data-end="268">Twin crashes from USS Nimitz raise operational questions</h3>
In a rare double incident, a U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet and an MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter operating from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68) crashed in the South China Sea on Sunday during separate routine operations, according to USNI News.
The U.S. Pacific Fleet confirmed that both aircraft were part of Carrier Strike Group 11, currently on deployment in the Indo-Pacific. The first accident occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. local time, when a Sea Hawk helicopter, belonging to the &ldquo;Battle Cats&rdquo; of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 73 (HSM-73), went down in the waters while conducting standard flight operations.
Search and rescue teams swiftly recovered all three crew members, who were found to be in stable condition.
Barely 30 minutes later, at 3:15 p.m., a two-seater F/A-18F Super Hornet from the &ldquo;Fighting Redcocks&rdquo; of Strike Fighter Squadron 22 (VFA-22) also crashed during a sortie from the same carrier. Both aviators ejected safely and were rescued by recovery teams assigned to the carrier group.
All personnel involved in both mishaps are reported to be safe and under medical observation, while the U.S. Navy has initiated a formal investigation to determine the cause of the dual accidents.
The USS Nimitz, one of the Navy&rsquo;s oldest operational carriers, is currently on the final leg of its deployment, returning to the U.S. West Coast. The vessel had earlier participated in operations in the Middle East, responding to Houthi attacks on commercial shipping, before entering the South China Sea on 17 October, as reported by USNI News.
Though incidents involving naval aircraft are not uncommon during extended deployments, the near-simultaneous loss of two frontline assets from a single carrier raises questions about operational tempo, maintenance stress, and crew fatigue.
The USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group continues operations in the region amid heightened U.S. presence in the Indo-Pacific and ongoing tensions over freedom of navigation and regional security.
