Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday convened a high-level meeting at his official residence , to review the security situation along the border with Pakistan, following recent ceasefire violations. The meeting was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and the chiefs of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The discussions took place as a fragile calm held along the border, with no fresh ceasefire breaches reported. Tensions had escalated after Pakistan violated the ceasefire agreement on Saturday, despite publicly committing to honour it. However, Saturday night remained quiet.
The ceasefire had initially been announced by US President Donald Trump, with both India and Pakistan subsequently agreeing to halt firing and military operations. New Delhi confirmed that an understanding had been reached between the two sides for a cessation of hostilities.
India&rsquo;s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reaffirmed the country&rsquo;s firm stance against terrorism, stating, &ldquo;India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and will continue to do so.&rdquo;
Despite Pakistan&rsquo;s call for US mediation following what it described as severe Indian retaliation, and its public declaration of a ceasefire, it breached the agreement. India responded swiftly, leading to a halt in Pakistani drone and missile activity.
According to Indian authorities, Pakistani drones were detected and intercepted in several regions, including Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as areas in Gujarat and Barmer in Rajasthan. In response to the threats, blackouts were reimposed in multiple border districts.
India officially accused Pakistan of violating the ceasefire and assured that its armed forces were delivering an &ldquo;adequate and appropriate response.&rdquo; Speaking to the media late Saturday night, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri underlined the seriousness with which India was treating the incidents.
&ldquo;India has taken very, very serious notice of these violations,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;We call upon Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations and handle the situation with seriousness and responsibility. The armed forces are maintaining a strong vigil on the situation and have been given strict instructions to deal strongly with any repetition of border violations along the International Border and the LoC.&rdquo;
In a subsequent statement, Pakistan reiterated its commitment to the ceasefire agreement. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated, &ldquo;Pakistan believes this marks a new beginning in the resolution of issues that have plagued the region and prevented its journey toward peace, prosperity and stability.&rdquo;
