Ceasefire Shattered: Pakistani Forces Target Indian Army Posts Along LoC Amid Rising Tensions

In a serious breach of the 2021 ceasefire understanding, Pakistani forces resorted to unprovoked firing on Indian Army posts along the Line of Control (LoC) for two successive nights, escalating tensions in the already volatile region. Army officials, speaking from forward positions in Kashmir, confirmed that firing incidents were reported during the intervening nights of 25&ndash;26 April from multiple Pakistani positions.
According to Indian Army sources, the firing was not random but appeared to be deliberate, with specific targeting of Indian forward posts&mdash;an alarming development suggesting an attempt at escalation. "The firing was initiated without provocation and was met with an appropriate and strong response by our troops," a senior Indian Army officer deployed in the region told this reporter.
The ceasefire violations come in the aftermath of the 22 April terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 people, most of whom were civilians and tourists. Indian intelligence agencies have linked the attack to cross-border terror networks, further straining already fraught ties between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
Military sources indicated that Pakistani posts across sectors in Kupwara, Uri, and Tangdhar were involved in the firing incidents. The Indian Army responded swiftly with small arms fire, ensuring that no casualties were reported on the Indian side. &ldquo;Troop morale remains high, and we are prepared for any further provocation,&rdquo; said an officer familiar with the situation.
Parallel to the escalation along the LoC, Indian security forces arrested two suspected terror operatives in Kulgam district&rsquo;s Qaimoh area during a pre-dawn operation on Saturday. The individuals are believed to be linked with militant networks active in South Kashmir, and their interrogation is ongoing.
In response to the Pahalgam attack and ongoing ceasefire violations, New Delhi has taken a series of tough diplomatic measures, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty&mdash;an agreement that has survived multiple wars between the two countries. The Attari-Wagah border crossing has been sealed indefinitely, and Pakistan&rsquo;s military attach&eacute;s in India have been expelled.
Islamabad, in turn, termed the suspension of the water-sharing agreement an "act of war" and has closed its airspace to Indian carriers, triggering concerns over wider regional fallout.
With the summer season approaching&mdash;a period traditionally marked by heightened infiltration attempts&mdash;the Indian Army remains on high alert along the LoC, bracing for what could be a long, tense standoff.
