In a significant step for India&rsquo;s tactical air defence, the Ministry of Defence has finalised a deal to acquire Thales&rsquo; Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMM). The agreement strengthens India&rsquo;s capacity to counter emerging aerial and maritime threats while laying the groundwork for future local production and system integration.
The Martlet LMM is a compact, precision-guided weapon weighing approximately 13 kilograms, with a length of 1.3 metres and a maximum range exceeding 6 kilometres. Its laser beam-riding guidance system provides highly accurate targeting, resistant to conventional electronic interference. The missile is equipped with a dual-effect warhead that combines fragmentation and shaped charge capabilities, designed to neutralise drones, light armoured vehicles, helicopters, and fast inshore attack craft.
One of the missile&rsquo;s defining features is its versatility. The lightweight design allows deployment from multiple platforms, including fast patrol vessels, helicopters, and ground-based launchers. This adaptability enables rapid operational responses across India&rsquo;s coastal regions and border areas. Its soft-launch architecture ensures safe deployment even from compact platforms, while its fire-on-the-move capability offers tactical flexibility in dynamic combat environments.
Operationally, the missile&rsquo;s guidance system integrates optical tracking with an automatic target tracker. This setup allows multiple secure guidance modes, including man-in-the-loop laser beam riding, automatic guidance, and laser designation. Optional infrared homing and GPS/INS navigation further enhance precision against moving targets. The proximity fuse ensures optimal performance against aerial threats, including drones and low-flying helicopters.
Propulsion is provided by a two-stage rocket motor, delivering speeds exceeding Mach 1.5. The missile is capable of engaging targets at ranges up to 6&ndash;8 kilometres, with a minimum effective distance of around 400 metres. Its modular warhead weighs up to 3 kilograms, optimised for a broad spectrum of targets, making it an ideal tool for layered defence strategies in littoral and inland operational theatres.
The acquisition also complements India&rsquo;s ongoing efforts to build self-reliant defence capabilities. Local assembly and potential co-development initiatives will support national industrial participation while fostering expertise in advanced missile technologies. Integration with existing short-range air defence systems and future platforms will create a flexible, multi-layered defence network capable of addressing asymmetric threats efficiently.
Beyond its technical performance, the missile adds a strategic dimension. Its deployment strengthens India&rsquo;s coastal and border defence posture and enhances the country&rsquo;s ability to counter small, agile, and unmanned aerial threats. Training and operational integration will be critical in translating the missile&rsquo;s capabilities into effective, front-line defensive power.
In essence, the Martlet LMM offers India a compact, high-precision, and flexible solution that bridges air, land, and maritime defence domains. Its introduction marks a step forward in modernising the armed forces and equipping them with versatile tools for a rapidly evolving threat landscape.
