India and the European Union have successfully conducted their first joint counter-terrorism exercise, focusing on protecting critical infrastructure and soft targets from drone-related threats. The three-day programme, held at the National Security Guard (NSG) headquarters in Manesar, brought together experts from India&rsquo;s elite counter-terror unit and the EU&rsquo;s High Risk Security Network (HRSN).
The exercise aimed to enhance collaboration in tackling emerging threats posed by unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and to establish procedures for integrated counter-drone operations. It combined tactical and technological training, culminating in a joint simulation to test real-world responses in urban environments.
The training featured advanced counter-UAS techniques such as artificial intelligence, sensor fusion, directed energy, and kinetic countermeasures. The sessions also focused on developing standard operating procedures and an Engagement Decision Matrix to safeguard mass gatherings and critical infrastructure.
This initiative is part of the EU&rsquo;s &ldquo;Enhancing Security Cooperation In and With Asia and the Indo-Pacific&rdquo; project and aligns with the Joint Strategic EU&ndash;India Agenda, prioritising counter-terrorism cooperation.
EU Ambassador Herv&eacute; Delphin noted that both India and EU states face evolving drone-related threats and must adopt coordinated measures to stay ahead.
The exercise underscores the growing defence and security partnership between India and the EU, which also includes joint naval drills and regular counter-terrorism dialogues.
