The first Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40 (HTT-40) Series Production aircraft, TH 4001, successfully completed its maiden flight today at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) facilities, marking a key milestone in India&rsquo;s indigenous aviation programme.
The HTT-40, a fully aerobatic, tandem-seat turboprop trainer, is designed to train the next generation of Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots in ab initio flying, aerobatics, instrument navigation, and night operations. Powered by a Honeywell TPE331-12B turboprop engine, the aircraft features a modern glass cockpit, zero-zero ejection seats, and an air-conditioned cabin.

With a&nbsp;maximum speed of 450 km/h and a load factor of +6/-3 g, the HTT-40 is built from a combination of light alloys and composites to ensure a sturdy and durable airframe. Key features include hot refuelling, short turnaround times, and dual-pilot changeover capability, enabling efficient and continuous flight training.
The aircraft has successfully cleared all systems tests, hot weather and crosswind trials, rain resistance checks, and received provisional airworthiness clearance from the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC).
The IAF has approved the procurement of 70 HTT-40s, with the first deliveries scheduled for January 2026, followed by 11 more by the end of the fiscal year, subject to engine availability. HAL aims to achieve a production rate of up to 20 aircraft per year, with over 60% indigenous content planned for future units.
Beyond basic training, the HTT-40 can perform close formation flights, advanced aerobatics, navigation exercises, and night flying, with future potential for light attack and counter-insurgency roles. Defence analysts note that the aircraft is a critical addition to India&rsquo;s pilot training infrastructure, reflecting HAL&rsquo;s growing capability in indigenous military aviation.
