In a major move toward modernising defence procurement, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has set up a high-level committee to overhaul the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020, aligning it with the government&rsquo;s latest policies, including the push for 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' and the adoption of emerging technologies.
Chaired by the Director General (Acquisition), the committee includes senior MoD officials, defence industry representatives, and members from academia. Its key focus areas will include simplifying procurement language, removing procedural ambiguity, and integrating advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.
The initiative comes in line with the government&rsquo;s announcement of 2025 as the 'Year of Reforms'. Former IAS officer Apurva Chandra, who earlier served as DG (Acquisition), has been appointed Principal Advisor to the committee.
The panel is actively seeking inputs from stakeholders until July 5 on improving procurement efficiency to meet military modernisation goals and ensure national security. Suggestions are also being encouraged to boost domestic manufacturing, support startups and innovators, and enhance foreign collaboration through joint ventures and FDI alignment.
Deliberations will cover issues such as design and development by the private sector, ease of doing business, post-contract management, faster trial protocols, and strengthening India's role as a global defence manufacturing and MRO hub.
The move aims to promote indigenous capabilities and make India self-reliant in defence production while integrating cutting-edge technology into the armed forces.
