The Border Security Force (BSF) has announced plans to name three of its forward posts in Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s Samba sector in honour of personnel who were killed during cross-border shelling by Pakistan on May 10. One of the posts will bear the name &ldquo;Sindoor,&rdquo; while the other two will be named after the fallen soldiers.
Shashank Anand, Inspector General of the BSF&rsquo;s Jammu Frontier, stated that the fatalities occurred when Indian forces were responding to drone incursions from across the border. &ldquo;On the morning of May 10, Pakistan sent low-flying drones to target our posts. The BSF was actively engaging these drones. However, during one such incident, a tragic incident occurred when sub-Inspector Mohammad Imtiyaz, constable Deepak Kumar, and army's Sunil Kumar were trying to counter a drone. It dropped a payload, killing them,&rdquo; Anand said.&nbsp;
&ldquo;We propose to name two of our posts on the personnel we have lost, and one to be named 'Sindoor' in the Samba sector,&rdquo; he added.
Anand also highlighted the contribution of women personnel during the operations that followed. &ldquo;Our women personnel fought on forward duty posts. Assistant commandant Neha Bhandari commanded a forward post, while constables Manjit Kaur, Malkit Kaur, Jyoti, Sampa, Swapna, and others fought on the forward posts,&rdquo; he noted.
The inspector general warned of continuing security threats along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB). &ldquo;We are getting many inputs regarding terrorists returning to their launch pads and camps and possible infiltration along the LoC and IB. Security forces will have to remain alert,&rdquo; he said.
Deputy Inspector General of the RS Pura sector, Chiter Pal, provided an account of the escalation that preceded the drone attack. &ldquo;On 9th May, Pakistan targeted a number of our posts. First, they started targeting our posts with a flat trajectory weapon and mortar. They also targeted one of our villages, Abdullian. Our jawans gave a befitting reply. When they (Rangers) reduced firing, they increased drone activity. In response, we targeted and destroyed the Pakistani terrorist launchpad Mastpur,&rdquo; he said.
On Tuesday, the BSF released a video capturing scenes from Operation Sindoor. The footage shows Indian forces carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure deep within Pakistani territory. It includes visuals of Pakistan Rangers seeking cover as Indian units targeted key terror launchpads, including Pakistani army positions.&nbsp;
According to Anand, the BSF struck multiple targets during the operation in the Akhnoor, Samba, and RS Pura sectors, including launchpads located in Loni, Mastpur, and Chabbra. &ldquo;On May 9&ndash;10, Pakistan opened unprovoked fire in the Akhnoor sector, targeting BSF posts. In response, we hit the Loni launch pad linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba and caused significant damage,&rdquo; he said.
He affirmed that Operation Sindoor remains ongoing due to persistent threats. In response to questions about the risk of terrorist infiltration under the cover of Pakistani shelling, Anand explained that the BSF had already neutralised several such attempts. &ldquo;We had thwarted an infiltration attempt by 40 to 50 suspected terrorists along the IB during shelling with preemptive strikes,&rdquo; he said.
He also reported the disruption of another major infiltration attempt in the Sialkot sector, where suspected militants attempted to cross into India under the cover of heavy fire.
DIG Chiter Pal Singh elaborated on the use of drones and the targeting of civilian areas by Pakistani forces. &ldquo;Pakistan used drones and targeted villages like Abdullian using various weapons. We responded by destroying several enemy posts, towers, and bunkers. Around 72 Pakistani posts and 47 forward posts were hit. In contrast, BSF suffered no loss of assets or infrastructure,&rdquo; he stated.
Anand reiterated the threat posed by drone attacks, confirming that such activity had led to the deaths of three personnel. &ldquo;Pakistan had used low-flying drones to drop payloads on BSF posts, resulting in casualties of three personnel. We are enhancing surveillance and defensive measures. CIBMS (Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System) has been in place since 2017, and we are integrating more advanced technologies in the coming months,&rdquo; he said.
He also emphasised the BSF&rsquo;s dual role of ensuring security and supporting civilians. &ldquo;We encourage farmers along the IB to continue agricultural activities. We ensure their protection and undertake civic action programmes as part of confidence-building measures,&rdquo; Anand said.
He affirmed the force&rsquo;s defensive posture and readiness. &ldquo;BSF is India&rsquo;s first line of defence. We do not provoke but will retaliate strongly against any misadventure. Our guard remains up, and our vigilance unwavering,&rdquo; he declared.
Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7 in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, resulted in the elimination of over 100 terrorists affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.&nbsp;
Following the operation, Pakistan responded with intense shelling and drone attacks along the LoC and IB. In retaliation, India carried out a series of coordinated strikes, damaging enemy radar systems, communication hubs, and airfields across 11 Pakistani airbases.
A mutual cessation of hostilities was declared between India and Pakistan on May 10.
