The Supreme Court of India has indicated a possible relaxation of the longstanding ban on firecrackers in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) for the upcoming Diwali festival. During a hearing on October 10, 2025, Chief Justice B.R. Gavai noted that a complete prohibition might not be &ldquo;practical or ideal,&rdquo; signaling that certified &ldquo;green&rdquo; crackers could be allowed on a trial basis this year.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, proposed permitting the sale and use of green crackers approved by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) and the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). He emphasized that such a move would allow children to partake in Diwali festivities while maintaining public health and environmental safety.
Previously, the Supreme Court had allowed the manufacture of green crackers in Delhi-NCR but prohibited their sale and storage in the region as part of efforts to reduce pollution levels during the festival season.
The final verdict on this matter is still pending. If approved, green crackers may be legally sold and used in Delhi-NCR under strict conditions to ensure minimal environmental impact. The decision is expected to strike a balance between cultural traditions and environmental concerns, potentially setting a precedent for future festive celebrations in the region.
