Four women were placed under preventive arrest in Uttar Pradesh&rsquo;s Budaun district after their minor sons were accused of harassing a teenage girl from the same village, police said. The action was taken to caution the parents over their children&rsquo;s repeated misconduct and alleged failure to instil proper values.
The case surfaced after the girl&rsquo;s family lodged a complaint stating that four boys had made inappropriate remarks and harassed her while she was commuting to and from school. Based on the complaint, police registered a case earlier this week under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
Police officials said all four accused boys were below the age of 13 and could not be taken into custody due to their age. Notices were instead issued to their families. Following this, the mothers were detained on Friday as a preventive measure.
According to the station house officer of the concerned police station, the minors were allegedly involved in repeated acts of misconduct. Police claimed action against the parents was necessary to deter future incidents and emphasise the responsibility of guardians in ensuring appropriate behaviour by their children.
Officials also indicated that the fathers of the boys, who are currently working outside Uttar Pradesh, may face similar action once they return.
The women were arrested under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, which permits preventive detention to avert the commission of a cognisable offence. They were later produced before a sub-divisional magistrate and released the same day after furnishing personal bonds.
Senior police officials in Budaun said they were seeking detailed reports on the matter. The district police leadership has stated that the circumstances surrounding the preventive arrests are being reviewed.
