A retired railway employee in Uttar Pradesh&rsquo;s Jhansi district has been accused of killing his live-in partner, concealing her body inside a blue trunk and later burning it using coal and wood, police said on Sunday. The accused, identified as Ram Singh, 62, is currently absconding.
The crime came to light nearly a week after the alleged murder, following a tip-off from a loader driver who grew suspicious after being hired to dispose of a heavy trunk. Acting on the information, police reached the Sipri Bazar area late Saturday night and recovered ashes, coal and partially burnt human bones from inside the trunk. By the time officers arrived, the accused had fled the scene.
Police identified the victim as Preeti, a 32-year-old married woman who lived with her husband near the ITI area in Jhansi. However, investigators said she frequently stayed with Singh at a rented house in Lehar Gaon, which he had arranged specifically for her.
According to police records, Singh is married to two women, both named Gita, living in different parts of the city. During questioning, one of his wives allegedly shared key information, revealing that Singh and Preeti often argued over money. Police believe the murder took place about a week ago, following one such dispute.
Investigators suspect that after killing Preeti, Singh placed her body in a large trunk and burned it using coal and firewood. Police have also raised suspicion about the involvement of Singh&rsquo;s minor son in disposing of the body.
A subsequent search of the rented house revealed a stove in the courtyard, which police believe was used to burn parts of the body. A murder case has been registered, and multiple police teams have been formed to trace and arrest the accused.
